we have no one to blame but ourselves if we do not like the results. In Greek mythology, where lives are planned by the gods, Oedipus does not have the
luxuries we do. It is interesting to see how he handles each situation when trying to protect his family and kingdom both before and after his realization that he was
unable to avoid his fate. When we first meet Sophocless Oedipus, he is a strong, confident, and triumphant man. While
traveling, Walton states, "he met and killed an old man who tried to ride him down. A little later he encountered the sphinx that had been terrorizing Thebes and destroyed
it by answering its riddle." As a reward, he is offered Jocastas hand in marriage. After producing children with his wife
and prosperity is enjoyed by all, the city of Thebes is hit by a plague and the crops are dying. Oedipus reacts by sending a man to the oracle to
find out why his people suffer. The man comes back saying the death of King Laius must be avenged and the murderer resides in Thebes. Oedipus demands that someone come
forward with information. When no one comes, Oedipus puts a curse on whoever it was that killed Laius that he should live in agony for the rest of his life,
and if the murderer lives within Oedipuss land, he should have the same fate. Oedipus calls forward Tiresias, the blind prophet
for answers. Although reluctant, Tiresias informs him that it was Oedipus who killed King Laius. Oedipus puts the timelines of his life next to Laius and the abandoned baby.
