system that results in attempts to learn a second language, a system that is related to both the native language and the target language but also clearly distinct from the
non-native speakers native language and the language they are learning. Tarone delineates the importance of interlanguage in second language acquisition and traces the history of the concept of interlanguage.
The interlanguage system is formatted by the interlingual identifications and the perceptions of the non-native speaker. Tarone notes, however, that
the development of this interlanguage system proceeds only so far before it "fossilizes", before the non-native speaker reaches full identity with the language that they are learning. The result
is that the adult that is attempting to learn a new language is never quite able to achieve the level of use that a child would reach when learning his
or her own native language. Tarone notes that while adults are never fully able to reengage the learning process that resulted in the complete acquisition of their own native
language, children can reengage the so-called language acquisition device when learning a second language and are thus able to avoid:
"the error pattern and ultimate fossilization which characterize the interlanguages of adult second-language learners" (475).
Tarone explains that the purpose of interlanguage research is, in fact, to explain this psycholinguistic distinction, to explain the process of second language learning as
