is much like a bride trying to plan her own wedding without realizing there is such a thing as a wedding planner: Instead of making the arrangements for invitations, flowers,
music, food, and all other myriad details that can create a very harrowed celebration, she can hand over the entire task to someone with experience doing just that. The
problem with Information and Referral is the extent to which people simply do not know such resources exist due to inadequate distribution of knowledge. Although people...know that there must
be services and programs in their community that can help, they often do not know where to begin to look. Not knowing who to call for assistance can result
in leaving a personal or familial crisis unresolved; finding help, however, can be extremely difficult (Wacker et al, 2002, p. 53). Intergenerational programs provide a valuable service that no
facility or institution can ever offer: the element of honest compassion without monetary compensation. Volunteering is a mutually gratifying experience; unlike nurses and other caregivers who are paid to
be kind, those who give freely of their time and compassion gain as much emotional inspiration as the recipient to whom they give it. This is especially true with
regard to the elderly who often feel they are no longer of any value to anyone (Friedman, 1998; Williams et al, 2000). Realizing they can become involved in the
quest to help others feel valuable themselves, Wacker et al (2002) note how the elderly represent a significant subgroup of volunteers, with many citing "altruistic motivations" (p. 73) for their
