is expected to reach 55 million by 2020 from 35 million in 2000. That is a 36 percent jump and makes this the fastest growling age group in the world.
Just over 60 percent of that population rated their health as less than very good, i.e., good, fair or bad. Older Whites and Asians rated their health better than African-Americans,
Hispanics, or American Indians/Alaska Natives (AOA, 2010). Most older Americans have at least on chronic illness or condition. The most common were: 49 percent with diagnosed arthritis, 41 percent with
hypertension, 31 percent with different types of heart disease, 22 percent with cancer, 18 percent with diabetes and 15 percent with sinusitis (AOA, 2010). About 27 percent of these folks
are obese. More than one-fourth of persons between the ages of 65 and 74 report they engage in regular physical activities and about 19 percent of those age 75
and older engage in physical activities (AOA, 2010). More than 13 million were in the hospital for short periods of time, an average of 5.5 days (AOA, 2010). This
is three times the average for all other age groups (AOA, 2010). Average doctor visits in a year were 6.5 for ages 65 to 74 and 7.7 visits for those
age 75 and older, compared to 3.9 visits for persons between the ages of 45 to 65 (AOA, 2010). The average older person spends about 12.5 percent of their income
