be resolved. Discussion Intercultural communication is exactly what the name sounds like: communication between people of different cultural backgrounds. While this is of great importance in the workplace as the
workforce becomes increasingly diverse, lets look at it from a different perspective, that of the person who will be conducting business in another country. The problem here is that cultural
differences can adversely impact communication. For instance, "Middle Easterners generally speak at much closer quarters than North Americans. Some feel uncomfortable being far away from others, even if they are
among strangers. Eye contact can be intense and constant" (Morrison, 2003). For North Americans who are acutely aware of their "personal space," and who have a habit of glancing away
frequently as they talk to one another, this can be unsettling. Other cultures have other customs that are unknown in North America. In Japan, for example, gifts are "an
important part of Japanese business protocol" (De Mente, 2005). There are many customs and courtesies surrounding gift-giving in Japan, and failure to come prepared will be seen as a
sign of rudeness (De Mente, 2005). In addition, in Japan its expected that meetings will begin with "small talk," which provides the participants a chance to get to know one
another (De Mente, 2005). Rushing in with the typical American "lets get down to business" attitude is considered rude, and may even result in a failed meeting and ultimately a
lost business deal (De Mente, 2005). In other words, poor intercultural communications can result in significant problems for both the individual and the company he (or she) represents. What can
