term itself means communication between two or more people from different cultures. Globalization is the primary driver of intercultural communications and advanced information technology is a tool that is used.
Intercultural communication is not just about language, e.g., syntax, grammar, etc.), it is about interactional factors, such as taking turns speaking, who begins or ends a conversation and techniques used
in negotiations (Yang, 2002). It is also about the socio-cultural factors or aspects of the persons involved in the communication exchange (Yang, 2002). In business, intercultural communication will often focus
on economic topics as well as operational topics, which may differ greatly between cultures (Yang, 2002). Further, communication includes numerous nonverbal cues that are interpreted differently from one culture to
another (Yang, 2002). It may well be the nonverbal messages that lead to more miscommunications in intercultural or global interactions than it is the words that are spoken. Before one
can successfully engage in intercultural interactions, it is important for an individual to know and understand their own cultural values as well as any prejudices or stereotypes one holds.
One of the most useful theories that is directly related to intercultural communication is Hofstedes cultural dimensions. Hofstede suggested there are four specific dimensions that cultures adopt: 1. Individualism/Collectivism which
is about the emphasis placed on individual accomplishment versus collective accomplishment. An example we are all familiar with is West versus East. The U.S. is an individualistic society that places
great emphasis on independence and individual achievement while Japan is a collective society and places more emphasis on group accomplishment (McGinnis, 2005). Businesspersons from an individualistic culture will tend to
