scenario, an American owns a company he established in Taiwan more than four decades ago. The workforce is primarily Chinese - 70 percent Chinese and 30 percent Westerners. When a
workforce is predominantly comprised of local nationals, it is even more important to have an understanding of the culture and the language patterns of those people. Americans are perceived as
being arrogant because of their emphasis on individualism. The perception is that the Americans think their opinions and thoughts are more important than those of their Chinese co-workers.
Because the Chinese culture is rooted in Confucianism, Chinese employees view their supervisors or the leaders as having total authority. That means they respect that person and will not contradict
him or her. This leads to Chinese employees being far more submissive than American employees. It also leads to a lack of creativity on the part of the Chinese workers.
Since the Chinese language is based on characters, their tends to be little room for creativity in language or communication. By contrast, American language is based on the use of
words in the construction of sentences. This leaves room for a great deal of creativity even in communication interchanges. Conflicts erupt in the workplace because of the differences in language
use as well as the differences in basic ideologies. The Chinese tend to be quiet or silent, which is in line with the Chinese philosophies of life. Americans tend to
voice their opinions directly, seldom being quiet or silent if they have a thought. The conflict then is such that the Chinese employees feel un-valued and dismissed, which is leading
