The idea of intercultural communication may be seen as commutation between those of different cultures where there is understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures. In many cases where there is the understanding the respect and approach will also follow. But the way understanding takes place is complex (Pettigrew, 2000). It has been noted in many cases that it is the awareness that understanding is needed that is often lacking and in many environments this is the route of issues. For example, a business meeting between western and Vietnamese business people may result in misunderstanding and the failures to reach an agreement as each believes the other is showing disrespect when the real issue has been a lack of cultural understanding that in turn lead to a lack of trust. If we consider the meeting and the events, we can then look at how and why cultural misunderstandings take place and assess what why there were different perceptions at the meetings. We will assume the meeting starts well, all members of the negation patties are on time, and all appear to be dressed appropriately, all wearing business dress with men and women in suits. The meeting is scheduled all day and lunch has been arranged at a local restaurant, with both parties agreeing to the menu beforehand to prevent potential cultural issues arising. However, the concern for cultural issues ended with this and the provision of translators on the part of both side.
