because substance abuse is a serious and wide-spread problem. Well begin with a look at some basic information. Substance-Related Disorders "Substance-related disorders" include "substance use disorders, substance dependence
disorders, and substance-induced disorders" and "involve the use of a wide range of substances, both legal and illegal" (Adult workgroup report). The most alarming statistic here is that 26.6%
of Americans have "met the diagnostic criteria for a substance user disorder at some point during their lifetime..." (Adult workgroup report). This means that at any given time, over
one-quarter of the population is impaired by some sort of substance abuse. A "substance use disorder" is characterized by "a pattern of repeated substance use" caused by
recurring, poor consequences "such as repeated failure to fulfill ...role obligations; legal problems; interpersonal problems; and use of substances in physically hazardous situations (Adult workgroup report). A "substance
dependence disorder" involves substance abuse and "a pattern of drug usage resulting in tolerance, withdrawal, and/or compulsive drugtaking behavior" (Adult workgroup report). "Substance-induced disorders" is not defined here, but
it seems clear enough what the definition is: mental or emotional problems caused by substance abuse. Physical Environment At this point of the essay, the student should describe
in detail the physical environment of the clinic, office or other facility he visited. The setting for treatment of substance abuse and mental illness has changed dramatically in the
last fifty years. In the mid-20th century, such illnesses were commonly treated in large, state-run mental hospitals; those who were less severely disturbed were seen in psychiatrists offices (Adult
