of the Internet in the past decade has been phenomenal. Something that began as a way to link government computers had developed into a way to hook up computers around
the world. While suddenly people could communicate with one another and offer free information, it was not long before web sites would spring up selling everything from software to vitamins
to clothing. Brand name companies began to create web sites to provide more effective customer service and advertising. Small business enterprises found that they could find new markets by
selling their goods or services worldwide. But with business and money to be derived from the Net, came headaches, lawsuits and copyright considerations. Opening up a business online means that
one must be cognizant of other vendors, and just as would any new business, checking to be sure one is in compliance with the law is essential. In fact, the
issue of intellectual property rights is quite important today. II. Intellectual Property and the Internet Intellectual Property rights on the Internet involves a great deal of
issues. However, two of the more important ones concern hypertext links and metatags (Fimea 1) . During the early days of the Internet , Weinberg explains that hyperlinks were considered
mere pathways or simply a tool for computer users to maneuver from one Web site to another (1). Today, some links requisite permission due to commercial association of the
site and when icons are used to link two commercial sites, there is an expectation that the two sites are affiliated (1). Many people will attribute links to the organization
