The effective apprehension, trial, and incarceration of criminals are predicated on integrity at all levels of the criminal justice system.
Integrity, in fact, is one of the most important values in criminal justice. It is an important tenant of practically all of our ideologies and actions. That is
true whether we are considering integrity from an individual or an organizational perspective. Integrity has been defined in a number of
ways. In essence, integrity means doing not just what is legal but what is right morally as well. Consider how this might apply in the nations penitentiary system
for the typical prison guard. Prisoner abuse at the hands of guards is one of the darker sides of the criminal justice system. Many guards actually approach their
jobs as though they are dealing with animals that have none of the rights of human beings. The reality, however, is that prisoners are human beings. Admittedly, they
are human beings that have been convicted of crimes and that are thus being punished for those crimes but it is the job of the legal system not of individual
