Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page paper integrating the concepts of Orem’s self care model and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Astute health care providers encourage patients in both acute and long term care to do as much for themselves as they can, operating within their limits while also responsibly stretching them at the same time. This concept can be related to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which classifies human needs in a range of five classifications beginning with basic physiological needs and ending with self-actualization. The purpose here is to meld Orem’s Self-Care Model and Maslow’s hierarchy in a way that can more greatly inform nursing practice. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

with basic physiological needs and ending with self-actualization. The purpose here is to meld Orems Self-Care Model and Maslows hierarchy in a way that can more greatly inform nursing
practice. Orems Self Care Model Models and Theories of Nursing (n.d.) quotes Polit & Hendersons definition of the Orem model as being the
"practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well-being." Of course this is not to be taken to mean that
the nurse provides little direct care, but that the patient is allowed to take on greater responsibility for themselves. Orems self care model is particularly applicable as the population
ages. By no means limited only to the elderly, it is highly useful within that population. Self care "is the practice of
activities" (Orems Self-Care Model Concepts) that patients need to undertake to meet their own health care needs on a routine basis. This does not equate to less direct patient
care, but rather to the increasing ability of patients to perform routine activities necessary to their own care. In the home setting, these activities might include caring for the
wound created by amputation of a diabetics leg, or self-catheterization of a woman who has lost bladder function. Self-care activities undertaken at home include many other less dramatic procedures,
