Change, John Kotter asserted that organizations make eight common errors when attempting to make change: too much complacency is allowed; managers do not understand how powerful a vision is; they
do not communicate the vision to the employees; they allow obstacles to obstruct the vision; they do not create short-term successes; they tend to think change has been made when
it hasnt; and they do not anchor changes in the culture of the corporation (Kotter, 1996). The result is failure. Organizations do not succeed in implementing changes because of these
errors (Kotter, 1996). Kotter argues that all organizations must follow eight steps to overcome these errors and to successfully implement changes (1996). The steps Kotter describes for a successful
change process are also mentioned in one way or another by other authors. For instance, in Organizational Behavior and Management, Ivancevich and Matteson discuss successful organizational change procedures that correlate
well with Kotters ideas. For the sake of clarity, Kotters eight steps will be listed and explained. The discussion on each step will demonstrate the similarity with Ivancevich and Mattesons
concepts and principles. [NOTE TO STUDENT: There are basically two ways in which this information may be presented - a straight narrative or a list. Complete narratives do not always
