position in the Japanese plant. The training program will provide much-needed knowledge and skill to allow her to progress in the workplace. * She knew the six-month training program in
the U.S. was a requirement of the job she accepted at the Japanese plant. * Her "lack of participation in meetings" is defined as attending the meetings but not interacting
or commenting during those meetings. * The company held a welcome reception for her with the other members of the department. * The company provides lodging during the training program.
Text There are a number of ways to approach this situation. The first step is to have a conversation with the young woman, whom we will call Yuki. Yuki
is not living up to the agreement of the training process. Instead of exhibiting eagerness to succeed in this important training program, she gives the impression that she would rather
not be there. She is taking no initiative to assimilate into her new surroundings. She does not communicate with her fellow-workers even when they try to begin a conversation or
discussion with her. Yuki must make some changes in her own behaviors and approach to the situation. But, the writer knows the Japanese culture is such that it would
be very difficult for Yuki to initiate interactions with others in her new surroundings. It is very likely that Yuki feels alone because there have been no ongoing special efforts
