and forget soon after the test is completed. They feel that assessment should accurately provide authentic evidence that knowledge and/or skills have been assimilated, that is, that real learning has
taken place. Tim Riordan writes that the "aim of teaching is to help student get to the point where they dont need us" (Riordan 52). As this indicates, the goal
of teaching and assessment is to instruct students on how to go about the process of becoming self-motivated in their learning. This means helping them to develop reasoning and problem-solving
skills and giving them opportunities in which to work collaboratively with others. Assessment has been defined as a "systematic, multi-step process," in which the teacher collects evidence that pertains
to the level of student mastery of specific information and skills and then uses this information to guide subsequent instruction and provide feedback to the learners (Russell 27). As this
illustrates, the contemporary understanding of assessment is that it should be an integrated element that provides all stakeholders (students, teachers and parents) with authentic information about the learners abilities and
deficits. In the past, evaluative methods were designed largely to sort students. This definition of assessment requires strategies that provide information that can be used to improve performance and understanding
(Mabry 21). In other words, it calls for authentic assessment. Authentic assessment strategies offer a greater degree of in-depth knowledge about students progress than the more traditional paper-and-pencil
