has long been dependent on foreign aid just to meet the most basic needs of her citizenry. Even the quality of her food and water supplies are largely dependent on
the good graces of other countries. If Haiti is to pull out of her status as one of the worlds least developed countries she must strive to establish a
degree of control over these most basic elements of her many needs. For too long Haiti has looked outside her borders to
solve her many problems. While it is important to continue to interact with the outside world and to take advantage of what is offered, doing so without looking inward
at our own resources has put us on a never-ending downward spiral. Basically three alternatives are available in Haiti for increasing food supplies. These are:
1. large scale domestic agricultural pursuits 2. small individual and
community gardening efforts 3. increased foreign imports
All three of these alternatives have merit. Individually, however, all three of these options also have shortcomings. The key to creating an adequate food supply in Haiti lies
in utilizing all three of these approaches in a coordinated and well-implemented manner. While it is imperative that Haiti continues to rely on outside sources for food in the
