on cultural tolerance may integrate individual self-assessments of respect and empathy or may include the development of rubric-based assessments that show reflection of the concepts of empathy and respect through
student presentations. Brodie and Irving (2007) described reflection in relation to the understanding of what has been learned and the ability
to maintain what has been learned in the presence of scrutiny. Learners may show adequate understanding of the principles presented in a diversity program that has a multi-cultural, anti-bias
message, but may not actually apply what has been learned unless they can demonstrate reflection. Critical reflections are important to developing skills because they show the learners capacity for critiquing
knowledge and assessing how that knowledge impacts behaviors. Reflection, then, becomes a precursor to capabilities that are linked to the content of instruction (Brodie and Irving, 2007). Brocklebank
and McGill (1998) were cited by Brodie and Irving in relating the importance of reflection in reference to programming that relates specific functional expectations or the need for change.
In diversity-based programming designed with a multicultural, anti-bias approach, the process of reflection allows for what Brocklebank and McGill described as "the potential for critical transformation" (p. 88).
The creation of a self-assessment questionnaire about the level of empathy and respect for other cultures can be utilized to evaluate the overall
perspectives of learners both before and after participation in programming designed to increase tolerance. The following is an example of a questionnaire that could be utilized. Empathy
and Respect Questionnaire SECTION #1 Please respond to each statement with the corresponding number: 1. Strongly Agree 2. Agree 3. Disagree
