Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction An institutional pharmacy is one located in a traditional medical facility (hospital, nursing home or hospice) which cares for inpatients, while a non-institutional pharmacy is one located in a medical setting that provides outpatient care for ambulatory individuals. This paper discusses the work of the institutional pharmacy technician. Discussion Tasks of the institutional pharmacy technician: A pharmacy technician is not a pharmacist. Today, it takes an average of six years for a person to earn a degree in pharmacy and get his or her license; the pharmacist is now an integral part of the health care team and a vitally necessary medical professional (What is a pharmacist?) The pharmacist has to keep up to date on such things as new medications on the market, drug interactions, the effects of various drugs and so on, as well as filling prescriptions and maintaining medical records (What is a pharmacist?) The job can be overwhelming, so the need has arisen for pharmacy technicians to assist the pharmacist. The technician can obtain a certificate in a matter of months, and will be handling routine tasks in the pharmacy, including helping the pharmacist fill and label prescriptions; provide customer service; and perform administrative duties such as filing and updating medical records (What is a pharmacist?) The duties are stringently delineated.
