put into place a green approach to waste minimization need to take into consideration two specific areas of plan development: 1. the need for change sin existing policies, methods,
approaches and practices; and 2. creating a means of supporting long-term sustainability for "going green." This plan addresses some of the central areas that need to be integrated
into a long-term plan that is both applicable and sustainable, and includes goals, methods for assessment, practical approaches and the delineation of responsibilities. Implementing an effective approach to improving
a community colleges efficiency and effectiveness requires campus-wide adoption of this kind of change initiative. Background Community colleges have been at the center of change initiatives that
aim towards green sustainability for global environmental change. Many community colleges nationwide have participated in initiatives and created internal mandates to improve their contribution to environmental issues, including global
warming. In an effort to reduce global warming emissions, many of these educational institutions have begun modeling ways to reduce the carbon footprint of these institutions, by reducing use,
creating policies to support recycling, composting and effective resource use, and maintain sustainability ideals as a part of the curriculum (Feldbaum & States, 2009). Some of the more innovative
strategies that have been developed to address climate change and improve environmental stewardship have come from community colleges plans and the developing of community-integrated sustainability principles (Vaira, 2004).
