health depends on a normal functioning nervous system and that that function can easily be impaired by subluxation of the twenty four vertebrae which make up the spine. Chiropractic
care is a non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical based approach that utilizes orthopedic adjustment to address illness. It is used in conditions as diverse as migraine headaches and scoliosis.
Chiropractic care in relation to scoliosis is particularly interesting. Some five million individuals in the U.S. alone suffer from this condition (Schwartz, 2000).
While many types of subluxations are the result of injury or accident, scoliosis is a condition which is either inherited from ones parents or the result of some nerve or
muscle disease (Farley, 1994). The term scoliosis is derived from "skolios", the Greek word for twisted or crooked (Erickson, 1996). Scoliosis most often manifests during the growth spurts
associated with adolescence (Farley, 1994). It is a condition in which the elasticity of the spine is impaired and spinal curvature results (Amundsen, Baumann, Becher, Clymer, and Niemuth, 1999).
Symptoms of scoliosis include pain and equilibrium dysfunction (Erickson, 1996). Although pharmaceutical approaches and invasive surgical procedures are more commonly
used to treat scoliosis, chiropractic care has been proven to be an effective remedy in specific cases of scoliosis. What quickly becomes apparent in reviewing the literature for the
efficacy of chiropractic care in treating scoliosis is that there is considerable controversy surrounding the effectiveness of such an approach. Physicians in particular tend to place greater weight on
medical interventions than in mechanical manipulations such as those provided by chiropractors. In reality, however, many of the measures employed by medical doctors are really a form of mechanical
