is initiated in the mouth and finalized with the passage of the waste products separated from the food from our bodies. Consider, for example, this process in relation to
a Big Mac that we might consume at a local McDonalds. This Big Mac is essentially a combination of proteins, lipids, and phosphate ions which combined form macromolecules.
The first step in the digestive process is the mouth. When our exemplary Big Mac enters the mouth it is first processed by our incisors which bite through the
bread, then the lettuce, then the hamburger. We then use our tongue to shift the chunks of meat, bread and vegetable to our molars where we grind it to
a finer texture. The addition of enzymes such as ptyalin in the saliva secreted from the salivary glands starts to break the chunks down even further from the basic
starches to sugars. Our Big Mac then passes through our esophagus to our stomach with the aid of muscular contractions
of the esophageal tube. Once in the stomach the real breakdown of the Big Mac begins. The intestines contribute the enzymes maltase, sucrase, and lactase; the liver and
gall bladder team contribute bile, hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin are added as is pancreatic juice (containing the enzymes trypsin, amylase, and lipase). These enzymes begin to work
breaking down the proteins of our meal and converting it into liquid. Trypsin breaks down the proteins, amylase the starches, and lipase the fats. The resulting liquid then
