"Inside the Womb" is an article celebrating the complexity of human life and our understanding of that life. In it author Madeleine Nash traces human development from the point of fertilization of the egg to birth, noting the similarities which exist between human life forms and non-human. Nashs article, although replete with technical details, manages to captivate the interest of the reader while at the same time instill a scientific understanding of fertilization, cellular development, embryonic maturation, and birth as well as the genetic and prenatal factors which affect those processes. Nash initiates her article in the setting of the gynecological examination room. We are introduced to the miracles of modern imaging equipment through the eyes of an expectant mother. As the experiences of this mother-to-be will support, technology has progressed in leaps in bounds in this area. Rather than viewing barely discernible radiological cross sections of the womb this mother is able to see a three dimensional color image of her embryo, that life form which will soon emerge from her body as a miniature adult, that life form which shares not only the mothers body but also her genetic makeup and that of the embryos father. She can hear her blood gushing through her umbilical cord on its way to nourish the little body. She can hear the quick beat of the miniature heart. While modern imaging equipment has opened up a wonder of opportunities in regard to our understanding of embryonic development, however, it has also opened up even more controversy as pro-lifers come head on head into conflict with pro-choicers as to the issue of what constitutes life.
