African Americans, Native Americans, immigrants or some other minority. This paper considers the situation of a teacher who is treating such a child with great insensitivity, and what can be
done about it. Discussion In this case, the child is the only representative of his or her ethnicity in the class. The teacher has made no mention of the contributions
of that group to American history; nor has the teacher taught the rest of the class anything about the childs culture, saying theres nothing to be learned from it. In
addition, the child has had a non-speaking part in the class play; it might even be considered degrading, since the child played a tree while all the other children wore
native costumes and carried their countrys flag. The questions are: how can the parents of this child work with this teacher; how can they help her learn more about the
childs culture; should the board of education be made aware of it; should other parents get involved; and how can the parents insure this wont happen again? Working with the
teacher. This is the teachers first year, so it could be that many of the mistakes she is making are simply due to youth and inexperience. A lot of it
has to do with her background as well; if her parents didnt value other cultures, they will not have passed that appreciation to her. It is probably best to assume
that the teacher is acting from ignorance, not deliberate malice. One possible solution is suggested by a mother of twins; their math teacher praised the one who was doing well
