company has endured many ups and downs over time. Today, however, Kmart is struggling to keep its head above water. In the face of decreased sales and a
number of other problems the company has, in fact, teetered the company back and forth into bankruptcy (Graff, 2006, Crains New York Business, 2008). Kmarts problems revolve around a
number of factors. These vary from customers growing reluctance to spend money on anything but strictly necessary purchases (a reluctance that has magnified in response to national economic problems
overall) to heavy competition from other big retailers like WalMart. Added competition from the number of dollar stores such as Deals and Dollar Tree have further complicated the situation
for Kmart. Just as Kmart has persevered in the past, however, Kmart will persevere today. It will do so as a result of the combined impact on the
many internal and external drivers of innovation that have kept the retailer afloat in the past. One of Kmarts most valuable resources in
these troubled economic times is its long-term management staff. Kmart management has benefited as well, however, from relatively new arrivals on the scene. These staff members envision a
new chapter for Kmart, a chapter in which the giant retailer will embrace a new image and a new approach that will serve to reduce much of the competitive pressure
that they are having to deal with today. The impetus for change lies not just internally, however, but also externally. Consumers are looking for something that they are
simply not getting from either the mega giant retailers like WalMart or the dollar stores like Deals. Consumers are looking for more convenience and for American-made products. While
