the West, conventional wisdom holds that Western nations have produced ideas, prototypes and products that the Japanese then took to true mass production to drive down prices. A look at Sonys history reveals the arrogance and the untruth in that perspective, dating back as far as 55 years ago when Sony introduced the first tape recorder in 1949. Five years later, it made radio truly portable when it introduced the first all-transistor radio in 1954. Sonys introduction of the Trinitron(r) television in 1968 set the standard by which virtually all televisions are judged even today. The 1979 introduction of a portable CD player provided the name that would come to be a generic reference to all portable CD players, the Walkman(r). The purpose here is to assess some of the origins of Sonys innovations. Sources of Sonys Innovation Industry Breakthroughs What is the origin of all of this innovation? The items listed above constitute only a small representation of the innovative, industry- and life-changing products that Sony has introduced over the years. Certainly, Sony could be fairly certain that there would be a market for its Trinitron TV and for its Walkman portable CD player. Sonys introduction of the first consumer camcorder in 1983 also could be assured of being popular. These and other innovations certainly were not customer driven, as most customers never would have considered that some of the things Sony has developed over the years could ever be possible.
