Not all innovation is associated with the creation of new products. One company that seeks innovation, not only for products, but for operational reasons, but also has a number of difficulties due to size is Samsung. Samsung does have the strategy to innovate with new products. For example in January 2004 at a Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas a new type of television screen was demonstrated; a prototype of a colour flat-panel display (Bursky, 2004). However, the company also uses technology form others, such as XDR DRAM which has been developed commercially by Toshiba but licensed by Samsung (Dvorak, 2003). Samsung has also developed HomePAD, a network system for the home to allow domestic appliances to be connected to a wireless network (Hoag, 2003). However, the trials for this product, which took place in South Korea, reported that the consumers found the system confusing (Hoag, 2003). A large company needs to consider new products simply due to product lifecycles and the need to keep pace with competitors. This is needed in addition to new ways of working due to commercial and shareholder pressures. If we look at some company background this can appreciated. Samsung is a wide ranging company that is well known for its consumer electrical goods. The company was founded in 1938 and has placed a great emphasis on its community relation local and global markets (Samsung, 2004).
