defines innovation as "the act or process of innovating" where innovating means to "introduce new methods" or devices. "Creativity" is defined as "artistic or intellectual inventiveness," and "design" is "to make preliminary sketches of; sketch a pattern or outline for; plan." Thus it appears that innovation and creativity feed into the design process. That is, someone has a creative idea, which can be used in a new and innovative way; once that idea is introduced, someone else has to design a way to incorporate it into the systems already in place. The terms are very close but not precisely the same. In her book Managing Innovation, Design and Creativity, Bettina von Stamm addresses this issue in the first chapter. She says that creativity is actually a "building block" of innovation (2003) and notes that a "widely accepted definition" today is that "innovation ... Thus, a person who is creative has the ideas that are half of the process of innovation; the other half is implementation. Creativity is a somewhat mysterious thing; von Stamm suggests that it has five sources: grace, association, accident, personality and cognitive ability (von Stamm, 2003). Creativity through grace is the "divine inspiration" way of looking at things; in this scenario, creativity is something people either have or do ...
