which Harold Innis theories regarding communication and the development of organisational power can be applied to the works of John McMurtry, especially in relation to Canadas position in the global
economy. Innis asserts, for example, that a major factor
in the way that social change takes place is in the way that communication media develop within a society. He makes the point that the two motivating factors of a
society are duration in time, and extension in space, and that different forms of communication media will facilitate one or the other of these objectives. Long-lasting and heavy materials, such
as stone, are used to maintain the stability of an empire over a long period of time, and Innis associates such media with the religious and moral continuation of a
society. Less unwieldy and more portable materials, such
as paper, are far less durable but are able to be transported easily: consequently, they aid in the physical expansion of a society. The greatest stability would be achieved if
the society was able to strike a balance between the two types of communication: Innis also felt that social change tended to come about as a result of activity on
the fringes of society. These peripheral elements would develop their own forms of communication, and would be able to use these against the dogmatic authority of the centre.
