injured, and why Koestler chose this injury to define the character. The book opens in The First Hearing with Rubashov dreaming that hes
being arrested. He speaks of himself in the third person (9) and we know him first as Rubashov (2), and then as Citizen Rubashov, Nicholas Salmanovitch (5), and later
as cell No. 404. Names are important to Rubashov and to the story because Rubashov used to be the Commissioner of the People (or the Old Man/God-the-Father (49)) and his
second in command was No. 1, the man that now hangs over him in the "well-known colour print" (12) and that overhangs everyones bed or sideboard with "frozen eyes" (12).
Dreams are also important to Rubashovs character, they remind him of his glorious and infamous past so that he can forget his
tortuous present. But the dreams have caused his injuries. Refusing to be "fully awake" (3) at the right moment, a guard is forced to him a "blow on the head"
(3), which has caused deafness and occasional loss of vision. He is arrested after an incident with "Richard" (39) and must walk on crutches (42).
The reason Koestler has given these injuries to the man who once led the revolution is that he is now aged, useless, and must serve the party in
other ways. He must let go of his vision of the past and accept responsibility for the partys ills by making false confessions. His confessions will kill him in the
"new model prison" (8) designed for torture (8) that he has felt before. Torture is the countrys form of euthanasia. As an old man, Rubashov can only continue to serve
