new alliances, new markets, new products and/or new technologies. One of these stories is the Walt Disney Companys 1992 entrance into Europe with its theme park. In the first
two years of the theme park, from 1992 to 1994, it had incurred accumulated losses of more than $1 billion (McGrath and MacMillan, 1995). These types of failures beg
the question - why do such efforts often defeat experienced, intelligent companies? Obviously any venture of this type if inherently risky. The likelihood of failure is one of the
risks of the venture. However, many failures can be prevented or at the very least, the cost of the failure can be contained, if the concept of the venture
is approached with the right planning and strategic tools. Euro Disney was planned as a theme park, which would be an updated version of Disneys Magic Kingdom. The location
was carefully chosen to be an area outside of Paris, France, but the concept was fraught with complications from the very beginning. The Walt Disney Company Executives failed to
investigate all of the aspects of the European environment and mistakenly thought that Europeans would readily accept American philosophies. The Walt Disney Company Executives failed to consider the reality of
the financial, physical and/or cultural environment of the area near Paris. They were also overly enthusiastic about their development plans and forecast an extremely optimistic financial future. DECISION
