goal, professional associations for psychologists, both secular and religiously oriented, have adopted codes for ethical conduct to help guide their members in regards to the boundaries that should govern establishing
a therapeutic, informed relationship with clients. These codes share numerous core principles, such as: non-malfeasance (e.g., doing no harm), practicing within ones scope of competence, avoiding exploitation of others, treating
people with dignity and respect, protecting client confidentiality, acting only with informed consent, and promoting justice (Hathaway, 2001, p. 225). The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Code of Ethics indicates that
"clients should be provided with the most effective treatment" when there is an empirically proven method that has been shown in studies to be more effective than another treatment modality
(Shead and Dobson, 2004, p. 125). However, when there are several different options for therapy that have proven to be equally effective, or when "there are subtle client-therapist variables that
are known to affect service outcomes," the client should be informed of all options and have the information that will enable the client to "make the best informed decision possible"
(Shead and Dobson, 2004, p. 125). The Ethics Code of the American Psychological Association (APA) states that all practitioners should "show respect for client religiousness and spirituality" with the
context of a diverse culture (Hathaway, 2008, p. 16). However, research indicates that only between 10 and 30 percent of psychologists feel that they have received the training necessary to
perform this ethical requirement (Hathaway, 2008). As this implies, it is an ethical imperative that therapists and counselors should be prepared to address all aspects of the legal and professional
