The language of advanced directives can appear to be quite clear at a time when the directive is not needed. When called to service, however,
advanced directives only are as good as the mind creating the advanced directive document. Power of Attorney Mrs Sparza completed a durable power
of attorney, naming her adult children as her agents in the event she should become incapacitated. "Mrs Sparza also specified that she did not wish any heroic measures and
that in the event she went into a coma, she wanted the life support terminated." Though Mrs Sparzas intent was clear - at
least at a time when there were no decisions to make - there is a world of difference between "heroic measures" and standard medical procedure. What appears to be
"heroic" to the general public is only routine to trained medical personnel, who are sworn and required by law to follow accepted standards of care. Regardless of personal opinion
or conviction and despite the existence of any advance directive, medical professionals must be able to demonstrate at any time that they followed accepted standards of care for any patient.
Accepted practice is to use any routine tool available, which means that a patient whose kidneys have ceased to function will be placed on dialysis and a patient who
goes into a coma will be placed on applicable life support. For Mrs Sparzas wishes to be given precedence over medical personnels obligation
to meet accepted standards of care, the better course of action would have been for Mrs Sparza to execute a living will containing a "do not resuscitate" (DNR) statement.
