is the "dont ask, dont tell" policy that allows homosexual soldiers to keep their sexual preferences private, but prohibits them from being who they are. In other words, they are
not forced to tell the truth, but they are more restricted. The "dont ask, dont tell" policy was implemented some years ago as a method of dealing with the issue
of homosexuality. The army is quite regimented. Soldiers shower and sleep together. The idea that liaisons could arise would be detrimental to the teams. Further, there might be discomfort amongst
the homosexual men if they have to bunk with someone who could potentially see them as a lover. The idea of simply not discussing the matter would resolve the issue.
If gay people really kept their sexuality hidden, then the problems would not have to be dealt with. On some level, the soldiers were able to maintain their privacy as
one could argue that their sexuality is on ones business anyway. On the other hand, it required people to keep things private that they feel is a part and parcel
of who they are. In recent days, the issue had come up in court. Now, there is some confusion as while a judge decided that the "dont ask, dont
tell" dictum should not be enforced, President Obama asked to wait on that decision. Geidner (2010) reports: "As the breadth of U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillipss Oct. 12 order
halting all enforcement of the militarys Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy became more clear, the federal judge refused on Oct. 19 to grant the governments request to put her order
