geographically, Arabia had been profoundly influenced by several tribes, and the Arab peoples themselves are regarded as Abrahams descendents who settled north in Ishmael and south in Qahtan. Masfiudi,
an Arab historian of the tenth century, maintained that Islam was a combination of Old and New World cultures, with strong contributions from the Indians and the Greeks, which generated
a philosophy that would lay the religious foundation of Islam. At the end of the sixth century, this burgeoning religion was confronted by the regional influences of Judaism and
Christianity. However, a prophet named Muhammad (or Mohammed) devoted his life to the perpetuation of Islam as a distinctive religion in its own right. Born in the Arab
city of Mecca between 570 and 580 depending upon which historical text one chooses to believe, Muhammad professed to receive a call to preach to his people the teachings of
a singular God, or Allah. He subsequently embarked upon a physical and metaphysical journey to spread the word of Allah that led him to Medina, where Muhammad established his
first religious community. 2. History - Prophets Jesus and Muhammad The primary difference between Christianity and Islam is that Christians believe Jesus (Isa in Arabic) is the
son of God, or the human incarnate of God (Hasan, 2009). However, in Islam, Jesus is regarded solely as the Prophet of God. Within the Quran, Jesus is
referred to as Messiah or Messenger, and linked closely with Gods word (Hassan, 2009). Jesus as a prophet is second only to Muhammad in the Quran (Hassan, 2009).
Muhammad differed from Jesus in that his primary role was that of teacher, imploring followers to submit to Allah, or serve him completely in word and action (Fellows, 1979).
