There are many models that can be used, but in looking at them there are some common features. Generally speaking these may be divided into two main categories, hard decision
and soft decision making models. Both have a similar initial structure; there are four points of each of these systems. These are the user involvement, the philosophy of the
systems, the nature of the problems that they can to deal with and the levels of the different specifications required by each systems (Checkland, 1981).
The process of soft systems models may be used as a good foundation to the understanding the processes that need to be undertaken. This first stage
is the entering of the problem and should define the actual problem, although this may be in an unstructured manner. This will include identifying the major players, looking at how
the processes that are currently used work ands examining the current organisational structures (Gregory, 2000). This will look at the business use and also who it is that will be
using the system and who it is that this use will impact on, for example, in a hospital this will be the patients in a business it may be other
employees, suppliers and customers. There may also be an analysis to ensure that the investment will have a greater benefit than the cost it will incur.
