allows people to access limitless information in seconds. Hoyt & Wickwire (2001) remark: " The Knowledge-Information-Service Era (KIS) is reflecting exponential changes in social, economic, government, career, education, work, and
other life systems" (p. 238). Work and the workplace have been changing a great deal due to the advent of the knowledge information systems era (Hoyt & Wickwire,
2001). This time in history, which authors dub as the KIS era, is coupled with a desire by the American people for both innovation and immediacy (Hoyt & Wickwire, 2001).
Indeed, people crave technology and so it is not a surprise that they are surrounded by information systems of various sorts at work and in the home. In part,
this frenzy of growth in this niche is driven by economic goals. It is encouraged by advances in science and technology as well as prompted by economic growth (Hoyt &
Wickwire, 2001). As a result of innovation and a desire for financial growth, changes have occurred in government, social, economic, and "other life systems" (Hoyt & Wickwire, 2001, p. 238).
There are obvious reasons why this shift came about, but regardless as to cause, it is hard to argue that it is here. First, most people are familiar with the
many systems available to them at the workplace. They use it in their everyday duties. There are numerous examples of how systems are used. In the past, things were done
by hand, but today, most tasks are organized by computers and managers have had to get used to this new trend. An example of this is that there is software
called Assistant, Assistant Lite and Assistant for Windows, each geared to help workplaces keep track of information on employees as it respects drug and alcohol testing ("Compliance Information Systems," 2007).
