technology (IS/IT) no longer provide any great advantage to the companies that use them. This paper explores the literature to evaluate the suggestion that IS/IT no longer provides a competitive
advantage. Discussion The research was done using the Info Trac OneFile database, which seems to provide the best access to journals and peer-refereed publications. The search parameters were "INFORMATION SYSTEMS
+INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY +COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE" which yielded 17 results; the second search was "INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY +COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE" which yielded 42. Any wider search terms would have brought back thousands of hits
making it impossible to handle the number of responses. Reading through the articles reveals that there seems to be some truth to the idea that because everyone uses IT and
IS, the competitive advantage in having these systems is less than it once was. However, the conclusion is not that IS/IT is no longer effective, but that companies need to
find new ways to use it in order to regain that advantage. Nowhere is it suggested that IS/IT is no longer useful. The first article concerns the impact of IS/IT
on the manufacturing sector. There, the author says, the "competitive advantage is provided by integrated information systems" (Trino, 1990, p. 36). New manufacturing methods such as just-in-time have improved
quality and enabled manufacturers to enhance customer service (Trino, 1990). "The reality of greatly increased global competitive pressure has forced us to leverage at every turn any and every difference
