Philips article is a narrative report; it is not a research study. It is an argument, however, that addresses the gaps found between information systems management theory and implementation.
In this article, the authors focus on three aspects of information systems management (ISM): planning, alignment, and managerial responsibilities with the greatest emphasis on "the organisational and managerial aspects" (Booth
and Philip, 2005, p. 391) of information systems management. The authors also address gaps in the literature, specifically in theory put forth and in the methodologies that are used to
examine the theories. The authors comment on the fact that there is no consensus on the label that should be given to this management process. Many different labels are given,
such as "information management," "strategic information management," "information management systems and other such titles (Booth and Philip, 2005, p. 391). It becomes confusing, at best. Booth and Philip (2005) argue
the "planning aspects of ISM represent one of the most critical elements of the whole ISM process" (p. 391). Planning aspects are also the most difficult to practice. Yet, authors
continue to stress the importance of planning in gaining a competitive advantage. Planning needs to target the following areas: * Exploiting IT for competitive advantage (Booth and Philip, 2005, p.
391). * Directing effective management of IS resources (Booth and Philip, 2005, p. 391). * Aligning investments with business goals (Booth and Philip, 2005, p. 391). * Developing technology policies
and architecture (Booth and Philip, 2005, p. 391). There are many different techniques and approaches for this type of planning but there is no consensus on which is more effective.
