It is no exaggeration to say that todays businesses are as dependent upon information technology as they are upon labor itself. That being said, information technology systems do not automatically confer a competitive advantage onto an organization; in order to truly reap an advantage, an organization must implement information technology systems in such a way that facilitate and improve the organizations performance by virtue of being soundly integrated into the organizations underlying infrastructure, and automating the multiplicity of processes that drive the organizations core goals and strategies. This paper will explore the most effective methods for managing a modern information system infrastructure. In order to effectively explore the difference between a functional and a non-functional information systems infrastructure, one must first understand the basic underlying functionality that the infrastructure is supposed to provide in the first place. Simply speaking, there are three primary objectives that are ideally met by a competently designed and managed information system infrastructure. These three objectives are the processing of information, the storage of vital information, and the transmission of data throughout the infrastructure (Valacich & Schneider 2012, p. 100). Within this paradigm, it is also useful to understand that basic information systems architecture is divided into two key areas: hardware and software. Each of the aforementioned three capabilities are served by a hardware manifestation and a software manifestation (Valacich & Schneider 2012, p. 100). In terms of the processing of information, computers themselves represent the hardware side of the equation, as they perform the computations that are necessary to make practical use of the information within the system; the software side of the equation is the operating systems that users of the system utilize in order to interface with the ...
