If we consider the environment in which these volunteers operate many of the traditional motivators are not present, There is no payment and as such any
theories associated with economic motivators are void and the traditional exchange culture cannot be used as a motivator. Furthermore, in the virtual environment there is also the absence to form
personal relationships that can be used to develop and maintain loyalty and effort. Markus (et al) believe that this is a reputation culture and as such motivation may
be seen with the reputation an individual can gain the recognition and as such it is the work they put in that will gain that recognition. One tool that is
used is the use of a credits list for the contributors. This enhances a reputation and a good reputation can then lead to other rewards such as being offered
contracts or jobs as well as increased self respect and the respect from others. If we look at the human relations school of thought there is support for recognition
as a motivator. Work of Maslow indicated a hierarchy of needs (NetMBA, 2005). This was not limited to the workplace but also included social and family life. Lower order needs
had to be satisfied before higher order needs would become motivators (NetMBA, 2005). Lower order needs include elements such as food and shelter and psychological well being (NetMBA, 2005). Recognition
and respect are higher order needs and as long as the lower order needs are satisfied then this an established motivator. The highest level is that of self actualisation,
