and written reports (Thompson, 2005). A major change has occurred since the computer revolution; this has facilitated improved levels of communication and access to information with an increasing level of
ease (Galliers and Leidner, 2003). Today, information which is valuable to the organization may be created internally or bought from external providers,
such as research agencies. Information is also becoming more accessible from a wide variety of means and sources. For example, in addition to research agencies an organization may choose to
gather competitive intelligence from numerous public sources including the internet (Galliers and Leidner, 2003). One of the main changes has been the
way in which information management is perceived. This was once a task undertaken by individuals within different roles; in the past it was not the responsibility of a single person.
At most there would be network with an IT manager. With increasing levels of information demanded and used there are more information management professionals than ever before. However, the main
change is not simply in the perception of information, it is in the way that information is managed once it is in the company (Applegate et al, 2005).
