the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is to enforce privacy promised made by businesses and organizations. These activities are based on the Privacy Act of 1974, The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the Fair
Credit Reporting Act, and the Childrens Online Privacy Act (Legal Information Institute, 2011). The Privacy Act of 1974 protects personal information that any federal government agency has by preventing
disclosure of this information. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 set up guidelines to protect personal financial information(Legal Information Institute, 2011). There are numerous mandates financial institutions must
follow in terms of information they hold about their customers. Furthermore, they are required to establish practices and procedures to guard that information (Legal Information Institute, 2011). The Fair
Credit Reporting Act also protects personal financial information that is collected by any consumer reporting agency (Legal Information Institute, 2011). This act spells out who can access this information. The
Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act allows parents to control exactly what information is collected about their child under the age of 13 Online (Legal Information Institute, 2011). Websites that
target children as their audience and deliberately collect unauthorized information will face legal and criminal charges. The Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) governs release and
dissemination of medical information. HIPAA states that medical and health information is private and can only be disclosed for certain reasons and with the permission of the patient (Virginia State
