From anonymous to citizen to professional to criminal (Loginsky, 2005), informants are comprised of various types of individuals who uphold an assortment of ranks or positions within the overall schemata
of informant classification. Those closest to the criminal activity in question are considered inside informants, inasmuch as they are the direct eyes and ears for law enforcement. Gang members
represent a good example of this particular informant being that it is typically another gang member - either current or past - who provides critical information no one else would
be able to get. The advantages of using this type of informant are quite clear: Without this specific insider perspective, many important pieces of information would go undetected.
At the same time, however, dealing with this type of informant presents inherent drawbacks in that they are often of the criminal ilk themselves and bring an element of physical
danger with their information. The two main elements in training a periphery informant is identifying the person who committed the crime and telling police where the perpetrator is located.
Watergate mole John Dean is perhaps one of the most recognizable insider informants in recent history, a position he was able to keep concealed for decades before coming forward with
the truth. A handful of individuals with internal access were long suspected informants; only after his health began to fail did Dean step forward as the person actually associated
with Deep Throat. When long-time Chicago Tribune reporter William Gaines thought he had figured out who was truly Deep Throat and sent Dean an email stating such, Deans response
