level of IT may be as poorly managed as a company with a low level of IT, with an investment wasted; likewise a company with a good use of IT
may be comparable to a good company that utilised less IT. Management will always be the key to realising the benefits of IT, however, there needs to be synergy between
the goals, the facilities and functions that are provided and the way that the IT is used. There are many companies that are seen as immediately benefiting, even if the
main uses is as a repository of information that allows fast retrieval. Financial services companies have made great use of information technology, both in the use for record keeping as
well as for marketing, selling and data analysis to increase the input of quality information into the decision making process. Likewise retail firms and manufacturers have used IT to help
manage supply chains as well as to increase sales potentials. The construction industry may be seen as one where IT has not been as visible. The starting point of
construction has benefited from CAD layer programmes for many decades. However, it may be argued that it is the contractors that are also able to gain a great deal of
benefit, but are often overlooked. Construction contractors are often involved in the negotiations for contracts that have already undergone the design stages, but they may be involved at earlier
