scientists and other commentators on society have long debated which of these factors constitutes the main influence on social life. Voices such as that of W.E.B. DuBois, who wrote in
the first half of the twentieth century, identifies race as the prominent factor in defining American social life. Currently, commentators, such as W.J. Wilson and Nancy Chodorow, identify gender as
having this distinction. Excellent arguments can be made for both positions, with either gender or race being considered the predominant influence on the nature of social life. However, ultimately, an
overall consideration of gender and race tends to favor gender as being predominant, as this aspect of humane experience tends to control the way in which we interact within societys
most fundamental unit--the family. DuBois on Race Anthropologist Franz Boas provided the Atlanta University commencement address in 1906, which was entitled "The Outlook for the American Negro" (Hegeman
456). This address has often been cited for having a "paradigm-shifting effect" on the way that notable African American intellectuals, such as W.E.B. DuBois, viewed the true significance of race
(Hegeman 456). Boas stressed a point seldom heard in Western societies at that time, which was that there was a lack of scientific validity for the category of "race" (Hegeman
456). Boas stated that "The physical inferiority of the Negro race, if it exists at all, is insignificant when compared to the wide range of individual variability in each
race" (Hegeman 456). Boas enumerated the accomplishments of African cultures, as well as the achievements of African artists, along with other descriptions of African contributions to the "advancement of the
human race" in supporting this position (Hegeman 456). In his 1908 essay "Is Race Separation Practicable?" DuBois not only replicated the main points and structure of Boas arguments,
