30,000 restaurants, most of which are operated under franchise agreements (McDonalds, 2008). Therefore, global issues can impact on a global firm, during times when US policies are unpopular a brand
which is associated with the US can suffer and needs to plan around this in terms of marketing and PR. Culture also impacts on planning and operations,. For example, in
India it was necessary to adapt to local customs and the Big Mac was changed for the Maharaja Mac, made of lamb rather than beef, and with a higher level
of vegetarian dishes. This adaptation due to local cultures is seen in many areas, for example, the lobster rolls of New England and the Salmon served in sandwiches in Norway.
Therefore there is a direct impact on operations as well as planning. Internal issues include the availability of resources, not only at corporate level, but also a store level, when
planning the staffing rotas. Internal influences may come from individual employees with suggestions and there have been many small innovations in individual stores to promote growth through involvement in the
local community, these impact on planning and operations as well as leadership, it also requires control. The local economies in areas where the company expands into is also a
factor, in many instances this will mean the development of a supply chain and to control that supply chain, to do this the company needs to plan ahead, they will
