that context. British Airways (BA) is an international airline as well as being the British Flag carrier, in recent announcements there have been announcements indicating success despite difficult travel industry,
with profits climbing by ?680 million1 for the year ending April 2008, as well as increased demand for travel, supported by transatlantic travel (Stone, 2008). In order to consider
the way that employment relations has been managed within the business context the first stage is to look at the different influences that have been seen on the business over
the last decade. The global airline industry, which BA works within, is one that is very competitive, having changed over the past few decades as a result of
many environmental factors; all of these have had a major impact on the airline industry and can be seen when looking at an economic analysis of the market. The
prices have been seen to fall globally, this is the result of the increased demand being outstripped by the increased supply, the deregulation has increased the potential supply and advances
in technology and the increased awareness of the potential for travel has also increased demand. The demand can also be seen as shifting with increased travel being undertaken with the
low cost carriers, this has changed the pricing structure of the industry and also placed increased competitive pressures on the traditional carriers. However there have also been events that have
placed downward pressure on the airline industry, the events of 9/11 and the outbreak of SARs have both had a negative impact. In reality there are many influences that are
