information on using this paper properly! Introduction It seems incongruous to imagine that such quintessential Americans as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman could have any connection with
the mysticism of Hindu thought and belief. And yet, the fact remains that the art form and consciousness of Transcendentalism as expressed by the two actually does echo the
sensibilities of Hindu belief. The Hindu idea of reincarnation is one of the most important considerations for the writing of Whitman. Whitman constantly asserts what he believes
to be a pattern of life, death, and rebirth in the universe. Death holds no terror for him, because he believes that it leads only to rebirth as part of
an unending cycle. Such an attitude allows Whitman to honor the common man. He sees him as a noble part of humanity; and he finds no one, regardless of
occupation or condition, unworthy of being saluted in his poetry. Although he was relatively successful in terms of worldly success through his work as both a writer and a lecturer,
Emerson also stressed the importance of the individual and encouraged people to rely on their own judgment. However, it can be argued that because he was primarily interested in
the thought and discussion regarding mystical experience, developed an attitude toward what was fundamentally a self-indulgent way of thinking. It is important to understand that that type of thinking should
