in the earths crust that cause earthquakes can do devastating damage and, obviously, one wouldnt build a nuclear power plant over a fault line. However, delving deeper into this subject,
consider this geological forces form the geographical features of any environment and these features, in turn, influence climate, accessibility, and determine, at least to some extent, how the land is
utilized. Most of us tend to look on these features--topographical characteristics, climate, etc.--as permanent and fixed because we regard them within the time frame of a human life, or
at most, a few human generations. Geologists deal with "deep time" in which a million years is the smallest increment worthy of consideration (McPhee 128). The topic of "deep time"
should not, however, cause one to view geology as a topic that operates over such immensely long periods of time that it has no real bearing on the here-and-now. McPhee
states that "California will be an island. It is just a matter of time" (216). No one can argue that this would not impact those individuals living in California when
the Teutonic plates make the final shift that results in California becoming an island. Nevertheless, the evidence that this has happened repeatedly across time is irrefutable. Seashells exist on mountain
tops and the fossils of marine animals can be found on plains that were obviously once below ancient seas. When the world is viewed from the perspective of geological time,
the role of geology changes enormously and it becomes clear that it is the prime consideration that controls where human civilization can exist, for how long, and what activities it
might be engaged in relative to land use. In a dynamic geological area, such as the Basin and Range that is centered in Utah and Nevada, a "deep time" perspective
