Those components include a childs physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development and requires an understanding on the part of mental and physical health professionals, educators, and, of course parents, about what a child is experiencing at any particular point in his or her earliest years. Understanding each of these areas, even recognizing the basics of what and how a child grows, thinks, and understands are all aspects of acknowledging and honoring what a child needs. Childrens capacity to think, understand, interact with others, and form their own self-image are based on their back-and-forth interactions with adults. Many. if not most, of the basic skills that are learned during a childs early years, such as walking, eating, and how to interact with others, are influenced by the culture in which that child is being raised. Therefore, adults must be prepared to do all that they can to understand their children, recognize the various developmental stages the child is at, and do what they can to nurture the childs overall development. Part of that understanding must be a clear cultural awareness and understanding. In many ways, cultural influences are as fundamental to the developing child as the food he or she eats or the physical care s/he is given. Suizzo (2000) points out that in the past ten years, more psychologists and developmental specialists have come to see that it is inappropriate, perhaps even impossible, to separate a childs cognitive development from his or her social and emotional developmental processes. The point she makes is that: "By examining the role of social and emotional factors in cognitive functioning and development, ... researchers have uncovered additional sources of variation to explain both inter- and intraindividual differences in cognitive development" (pp. 846).
